What is Placentophagy


 

Placentophagy is the act of a birth person consuming their placenta postpartum by either eating the placenta raw, cooked, in capsule form or drinking the juices from the placenta once it is cooked.

Methods Available For Placenta Preparation


Raw Method

The placenta is cleaned, sliced, and then dehydrated at 160 degrees for 18-24 hours then ground for encapsulation.

Traditional Steamed Method (TSM)

Your placenta is steamed with ginger, lemon, and cayenne peppers. The placenta is then dehydrated at 160 degrees for 18 - 24 hours. After dehydration the placenta is ground and encapsulated.

  • Has been used for centuries
  • Is thought to warm the body and speed healing
  • Recommended for GBS positive clients

Simple Steamed Method (SSM)

The placenta is steamed with out the use of any herbs. The placenta is then sliced and dehydrated for 18-24 hrs. It is then ground and encapsulated.

  • More likely to kill bacteria
  • Recommended for all GBS positive clients 

50/50 Method

We offer half  TSM or SSM and half Raw for clients that would like to have the benefits of both methods.

How do I acquire my placenta from the hospital?

 

Most of the hospitals here in the upstate will release your placenta to you under most circumstances. Make sure you discuss that you wish to keep your placenta with your care provider. Some hospitals will require you to sign a release form before placenta can leave the hospital.


Is Consuming my placenta safe ?

 

Yes, for most people consuming your placenta is safe. However there are some health contraindications that can make consuming the placenta unsafe. If you have any health concerns I will be happy to discuss them with you.
